Adventurous, Energetic, Cheery
I LOVE outdoor adventures! I’m an “up early and see what the day can bring” kind of person, as well as an eternal optimist, seeing the good in all situations and things.
Please share a short story about an important challenge that you've overcome (in your life, hobby, or profession)
Alyssa is a former personal trainer, athletic coach and is presently an elementary school teacher and Program Director for Bike Club OKC. She has been a cycling enthusiast, competitive cyclist and triathlete.
In 2018, she earned an Oklahoma State MTB Championship, A South Central Regional Championship and a National Championship for Xterra Off Road Triathlon. She competed in Xterra World Championships in October of 2018. She earned a National Championship in Gravel National Championships in April or 2019 in Lawrence KS, and earned a 4th place in Marathon MTB National Championships in Palo Duro Canyon, TX.
Alyssa was planning to give the MTB XC National Championships in Winter Park, CO a go but was sidelined in May, 2019 with a life changing accident. Her accident left her with a flail shoulder and a partial flail chest, broken clavicle, scapula, seven broken ribs, a collapsed lung, a traumatic brain injury, and a week long stay in the hospital with a chest tube.
Jump to July of 2109: Alyssa was cleared to ride her trainer, but was feeling hollow. She had lost 90% of the use of her left arm. Her business was gone and her racing career was eliminated immediately following her accident. Hardcore depression had taken hold. She desperately needed a purpose. Something literally spoke to her to get another Bike Club chapter going. Alyssa began working on the Bike Club website, fundraising and promoting Bike Club OKC. In approximately six weeks, she built a website and raised approximately $15,000. The next step was to secure the equipment necessary. Alyssa talked to local bike shops who agreed to sell bikes and equipment at cost. Alyssa used the funds to purchase a storage container, and all the necessary equipment for a Bike Club OKC program.
Bike Club OKC has now expanded to four schools in underserved communities, and has plans to add two more schools in 2023. Since its inception, under Alyssa’s passionate leadership, Bike Club OKC has created over 250 confident cyclists and has given away more than 300 bikes.
Alyssa is a believer that being outside and being active are simply excellent brain food. They stimulate the brain in ways that nothing else can.
