Susan Mitchell

Susan is a retired registered nurse, who after discovering the horrors of horses going to slaughter, changed her trajectory from healing the wounds of humans to healing horses in need of being saved. Today, Susan once again heals humans through the love and tenderness of US Horse Welfare and Rescue's equines as they mend the heart and soul of so many within the community who struggle with mental health and cognitive disorders.

Reason to join the ORORO Squad

It was recommended to me.

What’s your favorite thing about ORORO?

The comfort of the vest and the amount of warmth I get from it.

What are the best 3 words to describe yourself?

Tenacious, passionate, determined.

I started rescuing horses from slaughter back in 2013 after learning the atrocities America's "unwanted" horses were being subjected to. I now run a 501(c)3 nonprofit rescue and educational facility as well as a 501(c)4 nonprofit that can lobby for change on local, state and federal levels to put an end to horses going to slaughter and to save them from unnecessary roundups. It takes determination and tenacity to forge ahead when you face so many obstacles...and it takes extreme passion for these amazing animals who all too often are seen as "tools", not as "partners". I welcome everyone to learn more about our work and the work of hundreds of others across America who fight this battle daily to save America's horses!

Please share a short story about an important challenge that you've overcome (in your life, hobby, or profession)

Launching and running my own nonprofit has been a daily challenge. Everything from getting people to hear me about the plight of America's domestic and wild horses, the need to advocate for laws, to educate the public, to save horses from slaughter to raising the funds to keep our horses fed and maintained, fund programs for those within the community in need of therapeutic programs and more are just some of the daily challenges I face  My work is never done.
